What is your favourite time of year?

šŸŽƒHappy October 1st! I can’t believe my favourite time of year is here already. Last night I stayed up setting up our living room and front hallway for Halloween. Yes I know, I still have a few weeks before then but I love decorating with lots of jackolanterns, pumpkins, ghosts, potion bottles, and halloween sayings. I love cramming in as many horror movies and shows as possible. I love wearing all my spooky t-shirts to bed and on my days off. I love the smell of October and the cold chilly nights that can sometimes feel a bit eerie. ⁣

🄨But I don’t just love October because of Halloween. You know what else is good this month? Oktoberfest! Usually the first weekend of Oktoberfest here in KW takes place on the Thanksgiving weekend. It’s been a tradition of mine and my bestie to celebrate together since we used to work Oktoberfest when we were younger. Oktoberfest is also a tradition in my family, as my mom is German. As a kid she would take me and my brother to the pancake breakfast with my Oma, the Hans House, go to family day at Concordia Club and even if it was freezing outside, we were sitting on the sidelines of the Oktoberfest parade! ⁣

šŸ—Then of course there’s Thanksgiving. We have a small family, so normally it is just us for dinner and a couple close family friends would join. Over the years it’s extended to Friendsgiving events and I am so sad that we will have to miss out on those this year.⁣

šŸOctober is beautiful. I love that the trees here in Waterloo are changing to all different shades of red, yellow and orange. The best is being out for a walk or looking out the window and seeing the leaves blowing about. October brings on sweaters, warm drinks, lots of soups, blankets, forest hikes, baths, and mostly the feeling of fall. It’s hard for me to describe this vibe, but there’s something about fall that makes me feel like there are new beginnings or chances coming my way. It’s a time that I often reflect on what I appreciate in life right now and what I’m looking forward to.

So do you have a favourite time of year or favourite holiday? What kind of traditions do you and your family have? How has COVID changed your fall traditions? What are you appreciating in this moment right now? What are you looking forward to? What chances are you wanting to take?
