“When one door is closed, don’t you know that many more are open” -Bob Marley
I think Bob Marley had it right! When one door closes, it’s not just that another one will open, it’s that there really are MANY more open!
I was reflecting back over the last 5 months in this new world of Covid-19 life, and I started thinking about all the stories I’ve heard from friends, family, clients or even saw on the news. Stories about opportunities that ended, shifted or have started because of everything that’s going on and also just because of life. I’m sure that for many, these were unexpected changes or chances that came along with the pandemic and that for many these were scary, sad or exciting doors to pass through.
I’ve heard stories of relationships , friendships, and marriages ending and beginning. People have lost jobs or promotions, but also others have been hired for something new. Travel plans have been cancelled but others have shifted to staying closer to home. We may not have been able to get close or see others for a while, but we managed other ways to connect.

Did I have any doors close or open in the last few months? Definitely! A door I never thought I would walk through opened when I needed to stop in person therapy sessions and move to online. I used to be so hesitant about this form of counselling, but once I got used to it, it wasn’t so bad and I can see how it can be beneficial for myself, the practice and for clients who live farther away. Thankfully this opportunity gave me a chance to learn something new and expand my way of working.
When we think of many doors being open after one closes, it helps us to realize that you don’t have to be invested in just one thing, or one way of thinking, because there are many opportunities out there.
So what have you had to let go of to embrace something else? Have you ever felt a door closed for a reason? Were there doors you opened that changed your life for the better? What kinds of doors did you open or close during the pandemic?
